Truly shocking news breaking this morning about the untimely death of David Bowie.
I was privileged enough to see him live on two occasions, both of which were memorable in their own right. The first time was during his now legendary era as the character ‘Ziggy Stardust’
Me and my best mate Larry who was a massive fan at the time; went up to London to see him at the Rainbow Theatre in Finsbury Park in August 1972.
And my God, what a memory that was!
Absolutely stunning in its originality, and as expected with Bowie, worlds ahead of his time.
In truth it felt amazing just to be around at this time in his life; and to have actually witnessed first hand such a giant of the music industry performing live with the most incredible guitarist Mick Ronson.
The only godsend now though to his legions of fans around the world, is that like Elvis, this hugely talented story teller, fashion icon, actor songwriter, gender challenging and multi layered legend; will now live on forever through his music.
Strangely I downloaded his most recent album ‘Blackstar’ only yesterday and was listening in particular to a track entitled ‘Lazarus’ whose introductory lyrics start with “Look up here i’m in heaven”
And today he is!
Makes you think doesn’t it?
He’s gone back to his home planet. Influenced a generation of artists and did what he set out to do.
Beautifully put my friend.
